Regional Pain Management Fellowships

Anesthesiology Regional Pain Management Fellowship

The practice of anesthesiology has evolved dramatically in the past twenty years and is now influenced by a vast array of factors, both medical and administrative. Because of this, knowledge of hospital economics and administration, operating room mechanics and metrics, human resources, financial planning, governmental policy and procedure, and acute regional pain management is necessary for success.

Hieu Hoang, Regional Pain Management Fellow 2015-2016 shared a few thoughts as he completes his fellowship.

I feel incredibly fortunate to continue my training as a regional anesthesia fellow at Tulane University Medical Center. I work in a collegial environment with the full support of my colleagues. The academic appointment that comes with this fellowship has afforded me the opportunity to solidify my anesthesia skills, improve my leadership and teaching abilities while gaining advanced regional training.

As the only regional fellow I have a high degree of autonomy in managing the acute pain service and choosing which interventions I will perform and which I will supervise. I will perform approximately 500 interventions and supervise twice that number. My education progresses through independent study in conjunction with discussion and supervision by two fellowship trained regional anesthesiologists.

I believe that this fellowship is only going to continue to improve. We have a busy orthopedic service and a growing pediatric surgery department. In the coming months and years we will be doing more pediatric regional anesthesia and initiating new independent research projects.

There are few places on earth as unique as New Orleans. The variety and difficulty of practicing medicine here will prepare you to practice anywhere. For those seeking high-level training, a leadership role, and a good life outside of work, there is no comparison.
