Tulane University Medical Center (TUMC)
This 300-bed hospital, located opposite the medical school on Tulane Avenue, consolidates a wide range of patient services in a tertiary care environment. Each year, the Tulane University Hospital serves thousands of private patients from throughout Louisiana, the southeastern United States, and Central and South America.
The School of Medicine is the nucleus of Tulane Medical Center, which also includes the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, the Delta Regional Primate Research Center near Covington, LA, and the U.S.-Japan Biomedical Research Laboratories, among others.
Within these facilities, our Anesthesiology residents rotate on the wards, clinics, and ICU at TUMC during their internships. In the CA-1 through CA-3 years, they work at TUMC for the following rotations: General Anesthesia, Regional Anesthesia, Neuro-Anesthesia, Cardiac Anesthesia, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Pain Management, Post-Anesthetic Care Unit, and Pre-Op Clinic.
Tulane-Lakeside Hospital for Women and Children
Since opening in 1964, Lakeside Hospital has delivered over 90,000 babies and treated well over 300,000 patients. Tulane-Lakeside Hospital's commitment to treating women and their babies has grown by expanding services and offering a wider range of healthcare options for the entire family. Tulane-Lakeside Hospital provides the knowledge, expertise and specialized care vital to the maintenance of family health.
In July 2005, Tulane University Hospital & Clinic merged with Lakeside Hospital to become a leading teaching facility in the community. It has since become the surgical hub for the Tulane Department of Sports Medicine, providing our residents with a busy regional anesthesia service. Our residents perform an average 100 nerve blocks each month, most of which are continuous perineural catheters. In 2015, all Tulane pediatric services were consolidated at Lakeside, making it one of the premier children’s hospitals in the region. Our residents provide anesthesia for a diverse pediatric population, including sedation for MRI, general and ophthalmologic surgery for neonatal patients, pediatric orthopedics, neurosurgery, and ENT.
At Lakeside Hospital our residents play an integral role in providing anesthesia and analgesia for obstetric patients in labor or requiring caesarian section, and are given the opportunity to work with Tulane obstetricians as well as community private practice physicians. Thus, Tulane residents are exposed to the faster pace of practice in a community setting as compared to the University setting. In addition to Obstetrics, our CA-1 through CA-3 residents rotate at Lakeside for Advanced Pediatric Anesthesia, Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Management, and General Anesthesia covering a wide variety of subspecialties, including Urology, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology (ENT), Orthopedics, Gynecology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, and General Surgery.
University Medical Center (formerly known as "Charity")
Charity Hospital was founded in 1737 and is the longest continually running public hospital in the country. Tulane’s involvement with staffing the Charity wards, beginning in 1834, dates back to the very beginning of the university's history. Almost since it’s inception, Charity and Tulane have been partners in delivering healthcare to the underserved populations of our community.
As the only Level 1 Trauma center in the region, UMC is an optional rotation site for our CA-3 residents to gain experience in managing penetrating trauma such as stabbings and gunshot wounds.
Children's Hospital of New Orleans
Children's Hospital is the only full-service pediatric hospital in Louisiana. It is located in a beautiful, historic neighborhood in Uptown New Orleans, adjacent to Audubon Park and Zoo. It originated as a rehabilitation hospital, but, over the last 20 years, it has become a comprehensive facility providing a wide range of services for all children.
This 188-bed hospital includes general pediatric floors, pediatric and neonatal intensive-care units, an acute-care rehabilitation unit, an oncology unit, and a spinal unit. It houses a state-of-the art cardiac catheterization lab and a large surgical suite. There are approximately 6700 admissions referred from every parish in Louisiana, from 40 other states, and from 10 foreign countries per year. The Emergency Department evaluates over 33,000 patients each year, and the ambulatory care center has over 91,000 visits per year. The spectrum of clinical pathology and disease processes is vast, from the most common pediatric problems to the most rare diseases.
The medical staff at Children's Hospital is comprised of 375 individuals representing all pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties. This provides comprehensive medical care as well as a thorough training experience. The hospital serves as the primary pediatric clinical site for multiple training programs, including respiratory therapy, physical, and occupational therapy.
Tulane Anesthesiology residents will be exposed to the complete spectrum of pediatric surgical subspecialties and cases during their Pediatric Anesthesiology rotation at Children’s Hospital.
